Adrian Sinclair’s gaze swept over her bandaged hand.
His brow furrowed slightly.
“What happened to your hand?”
Anna Ross had just sat down.
His question made her instinctively hide her hand behind her back.
“It’s just a minor burn. It’s already been treated.”
He leaned forward abruptly.
His fingers closed around her wrist.
He pulled the bandage aside to examine the injury.
His pupils contracted at the sight of the red, swollen wound.
His tone grew colder.
“Clumsy. Can’t even serve a dish without getting hurt?”
The cold air stung the raw skin.
Anna bit her lip against the pain.
Her eyelashes fluttered down.
Her voice trembled softly.
“I wasn’t paying enough attention.”
Marcus Hill glimpsed the angry-looking burn.
He averted his eyes, unable to bear the sight.
Her fair skin made the wound appear even more severe.
Adrian released her hand with a dismissive flick.
His voice was laced with sarcasm.
“Did you injure yourself on purpose to skip work?”
Anna silently rewrapped the bandage.
Resentment churned inside her.
He had seen the wound clearly.
He had deliberately pulled the bandage off.
Now he was accusing her falsely.
She was about to defend herself when her phone vibrated.
A message from Adrian appeared.
It contained an address.
His voice was icy.
“Don’t delay our return to New York.
Go get your hand treated now.
This doctor is a friend of mine.”
He picked up his glass of red wine.
He didn’t look at her again.
Anna glanced at her phone.
She replied in a low voice, “Okay.”
She didn’t want her injury to affect her work either.
Even if he mocked her, she would accept it.
Marcus watched Adrian’s feigned indifference.
He couldn’t help interjecting.
“Don’t listen to his tough talk.
He’s obviously worried about you.
He just has a strange way of showing it.”
He turned to Adrian with a teasing smile.
“Your acting is terrible.
If you care about someone, just say it.
Who acts like this when they’re in love?”
Anna looked at Marcus nervously.
She feared he would anger Adrian.
She knew perfectly well.
Adrian didn’t care about her.
He only enjoyed tormenting her.
Adrian watched her forced smile.
An inexplicable irritation rose within him.
He loosened his tie impatiently.
His voice was cold.
“You believe whatever he says?
Don’t flatter yourself.”
Heat rushed to Anna’s cheeks.
Frustration tightened in her chest.
She had never thought that!
Marcus shook his head helplessly.
With the way Adrian communicated,
