A chill spread from her feet throughout her entire body.
She clenched her teeth.
She absolutely could not cry in front of him.
This demon did not deserve to see her vulnerability.
Adrian Sinclair’s movements halted.
An inexplicable tenderness stirred in his heart.
He raised his hand, intending to touch her cheek.
His fingertips hovered mid-air before slowly withdrawing.
Perhaps he had gone too far.
He took two steps back and took off his jacket.
The dark suit was casually tossed onto the sofa.
A cigarette case lay quietly on the coffee table.
He pulled one out and lit it.
The crimson glow flickered at his fingertips.
Amidst the swirling smoke, his gaze gradually grew distant.
In a daze, he saw the past again.
Her face was tilted up, smiling sweetly at him.
Those arguments and betrayals seemed never to have happened.
They were still the most intimate lovers.
The cigarette butt gradually burned down.
He reached out and stubbed it out in the ashtray.
He sank deep into the sofa back.
His long fingers massaged his aching temples.
Anna Ross gradually calmed her breathing.
Watching his lonely back, she felt somewhat dazed.
She quickly shook her head inwardly.
How could he possibly feel lonely?
Thinking of her mother's debt, she mustered her courage and approached.
Yet she didn't know how to begin.
Adrian’s cold voice broke the silence. "Just say what you want."
"Can... can I get a raise?" Her voice was as faint as a mosquito's hum.
He glanced at her sideways.
She hurried to explain. "Working with you is mentally and physically exhausting. A raise is reasonable, right?"
She immediately regretted her words.
Adrian watched her quietly.
After a long moment, the corner of his mouth lifted. "Fine."
Anna’s eyes lit up.
She hadn't expected him to agree so readily.
A sarcastic laugh suddenly rang out. "Did the money from selling the bag run out that quickly?"
He showed her a photo on his phone.
Her fingertips trembled slightly.
But she forced herself to appear calm. "Say whatever you want."
The expected mockery never came.
He actually deleted the photo right in front of her.
Anna stood frozen in place.
She didn't understand why his attitude had suddenly changed.
The phone was tossed carelessly back onto the coffee table.
He leaned lazily against the sofa. "It seems you're really short on money."
She remained silent, clenching her fingers.
"How much did that Sugar Daddy give you before?" He raised an eyebrow. "I'll double it."
"Be with me. I'll ensure you never want for anything."
His flippant words pierced her heart like needles.
Anna lowered her eyelids.
She uttered three words softly. "I don't need it."
This scar lay between them.
It was the bitter fruit she herself had sown.
There was nothing left to say.
