Adrian Sinclair glanced at her.
He felt a hint of exasperation toward his troublesome cousin.
His voice was flat. "It's getting late. You should head back to your room."
Sophia Roscente checked her watch.
It was indeed very late.
She offered a sweet smile. "I'm heading back now, brothers."
"Don't stay up too late."
"Goodnight!"
She skipped out of the room.
Adrian rubbed his temples.
She acted like a child despite her age.
So irresponsible.
Marcus Hill watched the doorway.
He stood and walked to the refrigerator.
He pulled out two cans of beer.
He tossed one to Adrian.
Adrian caught it deftly.
The can made a crisp sound.
The aroma of beer filled the air.
They clinked their cans lightly.
Marcus took a sip.
He seemed thoughtful. "She's quite cute, your cousin."
"I've seen her twice before."
"Never really talked to her properly."
Adrian's expression darkened instantly.
His eyes turned deep and shadowed.
He stared intently at Marcus.
It felt like he was looking at an enemy.
The room temperature seemed to drop.
Marcus felt uneasy under his gaze.
He couldn't help asking, "Why are you looking at me like that?"
"It's kind of creepy."
Adrian's voice was low. "Don't get any ideas about her."
"Just take good care of her."
His tone carried a clear warning.
It sent a chill down Marcus's spine.
Marcus nearly choked.
He hadn't expected Adrian to be so protective.
He quickly assured him, "Don't worry."
"I came here for some peace and quiet."
"I'm not looking for trouble."
He found relationships too complicated.
He had no interest in a girlfriend right now.
So Sophia was perfectly safe.
Adrian's expression softened slightly.
They chatted about other things for a while.
Before they knew it, the beer was finished.
Marcus was slightly tipsy.
He waved a hand. "I'm heading back to sleep."
"You should rest early too."
The room fell quiet again.
Adrian set down his empty can.
He took out his phone and scrolled through his contacts.
He stopped at Anna Ross's name.
It was so late.
She was probably asleep.
He was about to send a message.
But an incoming call interrupted him.
It was his grandpa.
He answered the call.
Grandpa Lowell's voice was excited. "Chloe is also going to New York."
"Take her with you."
"Look after her on the way."
Adrian frowned deeply.
Displeasure flashed in his eyes.
But his grandpa had asked.
He couldn't refuse.
He replied softly, "Okay."
"Don't worry, Grandpa."
"I'll take good care of her."
Grandpa Lowell hung up, satisfied.
He said a car would come for them tomorrow.
He reminded Adrian to get some rest.
Adrian walked to the floor-to-ceiling window.
His dark eyes gazed down at the street below.
Neon lights flickered.
Cars streamed like woven threads.
He turned and leaned against the glass.
He typed out a message to Anna.
He pressed send.
Anna was fast asleep.
The message alert jolted her awake.
Seeing Adrian's name, she gritted her teeth in frustration.
Why now of all times?
Right when she was about to fall asleep.
He was definitely doing this on purpose.
