Alexander Roland gazed at his long-lost sister with admiration shimmering in his eyes. He hadn't expected Evelyn Roland to possess such unique insights in design.
His slender fingers rolled up the blueprint as he casually poured her a glass of warm water.
"The design team will revise according to your suggestions." A faint smile touched Alexander's lips. "How's Stanford treating you?"
"It's fine." Evelyn accepted the glass, her fingertips absently tracing its rim.
His brotherly concern still felt unfamiliar. The glass clinked sharply against the table as she set it down abruptly.
"Don't touch that mining project in Colorado." Her gaze locked with his. "I can't explain why now, but steer clear of it."
She knew Isabella Langley was overseeing that venture. Since reasoning with Isabella proved futile, cutting it off at the source was the only solution.
Alexander's brow furrowed slightly, yet he nodded without hesitation. "Understood. I'll inform Isabella immediately."
"I should return to campus." Evelyn rose, still unaccustomed to familial interactions.
"I'll have the driver—"
"Unnecessary." Her eyes flicked to the stack of pending revisions. "You've got enough to handle."
After seeing his sister out, Alexander promptly issued Isabella's suspension notice.
Meanwhile, Isabella was trashing her office in a rage. The notification made her tremble violently, nails digging crescent moons into her palms.
"Since when does he take orders from her?" She ground her teeth. "This project will happen—no matter what!"
As night fell, the Roland dining room blazed with light.
Sophia Roland fretfully served her daughter. "Darling, about that Nathan Evans situation..."
"Just a misunderstanding, Mother." Isabella's eyes glistened with unshed tears. "I visited him at the hospital, and he assumed..."
Her trailing words twisted Sophia's heart.
"Leave it to me." Sophia patted her daughter's hand reassuringly.
"Thank you, Mother." Isabella bowed her head over her plate, silken hair veiling her contorted expression.
