"Can I help you?" Evelyn Roland lifted her gaze, her tone distant.
The ponytailed girl in front of her widened her eyes. "You don't remember me? We're in the same class! I'm here to remind you about tonight's performance."
Performance? Evelyn's brows furrowed slightly.
"Oh my god!" The girl dramatically covered her mouth. "Evelyn, you're performing at the Homecoming Gala tonight!"
Homecoming Gala? She never signed up.
The air turned icy. The girl shrank back, unable to meet Evelyn's frosty stare.
"Who has the sign-up sheet?" Her voice was glacial.
"T-the student council president..." the girl stammered.
Evelyn turned and walked away without another word.
The student council office door slammed open. Everyone looked up in unison.
Evelyn strode straight to the girl seated at the head of the table.
"The sign-up sheet." She extended her hand.
The president blinked twice before scrambling to pull the form from a drawer.
Pretty face, empty head? The president smirked inwardly.
Evelyn scanned the list rapidly, her finger freezing over one name.
The room plunged into subzero temperatures. Someone shivered involuntarily.
"I never signed up." Her voice tightened. "Can this be canceled?"
The president grimaced. "The list was already submitted to the school administration..."
Evelyn's fists clenched, knuckles whitening.
"What's the performance?" Each word sounded forcibly extracted.
"P-piano solo..."
Piano? Really.
A cold laugh escaped her lips as she slammed the form onto the desk. She turned on her heel, leaving a trail of icy air in her wake.
Around the corridor corner, Isabella Langley pocketed her phone, a triumphant smirk playing on her lips.
"Mom! Dad! Brother!" She bounded into the living room, throwing herself onto the sofa.
"What's got you so excited?" Mrs. Roland affectionately ruffled her hair.
"Evelyn's performing piano at the Homecoming Gala tonight! Let's all go, okay?" She batted her doe eyes innocently.
Mr. Roland immediately stood. "Really? We should get ready then!"
"I saw her name on the list myself!" Isabella declared solemnly.
The family scrambled to change clothes. Isabella smoothed her skirt, masking the malice in her eyes.
