Vincent Lowell stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, cigarette ash crumbling from his fingertips.
The cityscape stretched before him, its bustling traffic mirrored in the storm brewing behind his eyes.
Going head-to-head with the Roland family would be suicide.
But if it came to that...
He stubbed out the cigarette and grabbed his suit jacket.
Meanwhile, in the Roland Group CEO's office...
"Medical leave?" Evelyn Roland's lips curved in amusement. "It's just a scratch."
She slid a file across the desk to Alexander Roland. "I'll handle next week's bid personally."
Her phone vibrated.
"Boss!" Dylan Orlando's tense voice crackled through. "The Lowells are digging into you."
Evelyn's fingers stilled.
"Since when?"
"Just got the intel." Dylan lowered his voice. "Vincent Lowell gave the order himself."
Evelyn's eyes narrowed.
Beyond the glass, storm clouds gathered over the city skyline.
"Stand down on current ops." Her fingers flew across the keyboard. "Await my signal."
"Should I—"
"Don't spook them." She cut him off. "Meet at the usual spot tonight."
After hanging up, she scrolled through her contacts.
The cursor hovered over "Private Investigator."
The break room coffee machine hummed.
Evelyn dialed another number.
"Boss!" Dylan's excited whisper carried through.
"Café Southbank." Evelyn kept her voice low. "Get L to forge new identities."
She took a sip of coffee. "Make it fast."
Her computer screen still glowed when she returned.
Thirty minutes later, her phone buzzed.
"Done."
Evelyn smiled.
L might be greedy, but he was efficient.
Most importantly—with enough money, he could make the dead walk.
She closed the file, a glint of steel in her gaze.
If the Lowells wanted dirt, she'd give them an avalanche.
