No matter what, Beverly and Walter were Evelyn's adoptive parents. Even though they treated her horribly, Margaret, their sister-in-law, had taken Evelyn in, offering a ray of hope.
Nathaniel was still grateful that the Simmonses had raised Evelyn.
But their greed was beyond anything he had anticipated.
To think they would show up at Evelyn's doorstep to threaten her? Unacceptable.
Evelyn shut the door and sank onto the couch. "I knew this would happen the moment the demolition was announced. They'd definitely come for that house."
Even blood relatives would fight over money, let alone adoptive parents.
Nathaniel's voice was firm. "Don't worry, Evelyn. I'll handle this."
It would take him nothing more than a single call to deal with people like them.
Margaret emerged from the kitchen, her face lined with worry. "Evelyn, they won't stop here. They'll keep coming back. How did they even find this place? I swear I didn’t tell anyone."
"I have a hunch about how they found us. It doesn’t matter now. Just don’t give in, no matter what."
Evelyn was certain Penelope had given them the address.
Penelope was also the reason they had tracked her down at the studio.
Nathaniel reassured the distraught Margaret. "Aunt Margaret, don’t worry. Leave it to me."
"You don’t understand how shameless they are, Nathaniel. I can handle it, but I don’t want Evelyn hurt. She’s still so young. She has her whole life ahead of her." Tears spilled down Margaret’s cheeks.
Normally composed, Margaret only broke down when pushed to her limits.
Olivia guided Margaret to the bedroom to comfort her, then shot Nathaniel a meaningful glance.
He knew exactly what needed to be done. Pulling out his phone, he sent a quick message to his assistant: Look into the demolition case.
The first step was identifying the company behind the demolition. Nathaniel already had a plan forming.
The old Nathaniel might have resorted to extreme measures—like having Beverly and Walter disappear permanently. But now, reformed, he would teach them a lesson the right way.
He met Evelyn’s gaze, his voice steady. "Don’t worry. We’ll stand by you until this is over."
"But it’ll take so much time."
"We’ll take turns keeping you company." Just then, Julian walked in.
