"What? Nathaniel already handled this. Who signed it?"
"According to the neighbors, your adoptive parents were here earlier. It must’ve been them. What do we do now?"
Evelyn shot to her feet and grabbed her bag. "Stay calm, Aunt Margaret. I’m on my way."
Jonathan Reeves caught up to her in the hallway. "Where are you going in such a hurry?"
"Family emergency."
"Let me drive you. It’s quitting time anyway."
Evelyn, eager to reach Margaret, nodded and slid into his car.
They sped toward the old neighborhood.
The moment they arrived, Evelyn saw her adoptive parents harassing Margaret.
She stormed over, her voice icy. "Stop! What the hell are you doing?"
Beverly Simmons smirked. "I signed the demolition papers, Evelyn Carter. That house is ours. Don’t think you’re getting a single penny."
Evelyn’s brows furrowed. "That’s impossible. You don’t own it. How could you sign anything?"
Jonathan stepped forward. "Evelyn, stay with Aunt Margaret. I’ll talk to the project manager."
Beverly and Walter exchanged smug glances before she sneered. "Waste your time if you want. The papers are signed. Come on, Walter. Let’s go wait for our money."
As Evelyn comforted Margaret, Jonathan returned from the office, his expression grim. "Evelyn… did you piss someone off?"
