Nathaniel Whitmore wasn’t angry when he heard Evelyn Carter disliked Jonathan Reeves.
In fact, it pleased him.
But he couldn’t fathom why she’d even compare him to that man. Unlike that scheming bastard, Nathaniel would never betray her trust.
A smirk curled his lips. "At least your instincts aren’t completely off. Jonathan’s character is flawed—ambition without substance."
"Not to mention his obsession with status and his manipulative nature."
Evelyn arched a brow. "Nathaniel Whitmore, do you get some twisted satisfaction from belittling others?"
She might not like Jonathan, but she respected his work ethic. He wasn’t the villain Nathaniel painted him to be.
"I’m stating facts."
"And I find your judgment lacking. Try harder." She turned toward the window, effectively ending the conversation.
The sight of the back of her head irritated him.
His frustration only grew when he remembered spotting her leaving a hotel with another man—someone he didn’t recognize.
Evelyn always seemed surrounded by attractive men.
She checked her watch. "Drop me off here."
"You live in this area?" His tone was skeptical.
"I’ll take the subway. It’s faster."
"Which neighborhood? I can drive you."
"No need. You’d have to go out of your way."
Her blunt refusal stung his pride. He kicked the back of the driver’s seat. "Pull over. Let her out."
The car stopped abruptly.
Evelyn stepped out, but hesitated before shutting the door. She turned back, meeting Nathaniel’s expectant gaze.
His eyes gleamed. "Changed your mind?"
If she wanted to get back in, he’d allow it.
"Nine a.m. tomorrow. Courthouse. Don’t be late." Her voice was firm.
His jaw tightened.
Before he could respond, the door slammed shut. His fingers tugged at his tie, frustration simmering beneath his skin. He didn’t even understand why he was so agitated.
By the time Evelyn got home, Margaret Dawson had prepared an elaborate dinner.
Christopher Montgomery—her ever-charming cousin—lavished praise on every dish, making Margaret beam with pride.
Evelyn watched, amused. She’d never realized just how effortlessly Christopher could sweet-talk his way into anyone’s good graces.
Between his striking looks and silver tongue, no woman stood a chance.
After dinner, they settled on the couch. Evelyn lowered her voice. "Chris, now I see why women adore you. You’ve mastered the art of flattery."
He grinned. "Can’t help it. Comes naturally."
"Teach me."
He ruffled her hair. "You don’t need it. Just being yourself is enough. If anyone gives you trouble, remember—you’ve got six brothers ready to back you up."
The reassurance warmed her. Having family to rely on was a comfort she’d missed.
She smiled. "Noted. By the way, when does your music academy open? I’d love to take weekend lessons. Work-free Saturdays sound perfect."
"It’ll take a while. Even after renovations, we need to air out the place."
"How about buying a piano for home? I can teach you basics first. That way, you’ll be ahead when classes start."
"Deal!"
"Rest up. I’ll head out now. Tomorrow, we’ll shop for the perfect piano."
Her smile faltered.
Tomorrow was the day she and Nathaniel would finalize their divorce.
