Evelyn's heart ached with guilt. She stepped forward and embraced Judith, offering what little comfort she could. "Mrs. Reeves, please don't cry."

"The doctors said they're just minor injuries. He'll recover with some rest."

Judith's voice trembled. "Have you ever seen 'minor injuries' this severe?"

"Mrs. Reeves, I know how hard this is, but you must stay strong. You need to take care of yourself—otherwise, who will look after Jonathan? With your care, he’ll surely get better soon."

It was the only reassurance she could give.

Judith sank onto a nearby stool, clutching Evelyn’s hand as tears streamed down her face. "Evelyn, I don’t know what I’d do without you here. I feel so helpless."

"Don’t worry, Mrs. Reeves. I’ll stay with you and help take care of Jonathan until he’s fully recovered and discharged."

Jonathan watched Evelyn carefully from the bed, gauging her sincerity. When he realized she wasn’t lying, a sly thought crossed his mind.

Just yesterday, he had thought all hope was lost after her brother confronted him outside the university.

Men understood each other too well. One glance was enough to tell him her brother was someone of influence—the kind who would naturally look down on someone like Jonathan, who came from an ordinary background.

But fate had other plans.

Who would’ve thought that after getting beaten up, Evelyn would volunteer to take care of him? This was his chance—his opportunity to get close to her again.

It didn’t matter whether her brother was truly responsible. He would make sure to pin the blame on him anyway. Guilt was a powerful tool, and he intended to use it to his advantage.

He scribbled in his notebook and held it up. "Mom, I’m hungry. I really want your chicken soup."

Judith’s expression softened. "Of course, sweetheart. I’ll go home and make it right away. But who will stay with you while I’m gone?"

Evelyn understood the unspoken request. Without hesitation, she said, "Don’t worry, Mrs. Reeves. I’ll stay with him."

Judith gave her a grateful smile. "You’re so kind, Evelyn. I’ll feel much better knowing you’re here with him. I’ll be back soon."

Once Judith left, Evelyn turned to Jonathan, her expression serious. "What exactly did you tell the police?"

Instead of answering, he handed her his notepad. She skimmed through it and saw that he had only provided basic details—time and place—without naming any suspects.

Then he flipped back to an earlier page, where he had written: "Don’t worry, Evelyn. I won’t tell the police anything."

"Your brother misunderstood me, but I don’t regret anything. There’s nothing wrong with loving someone."

He wasn’t about to waste this second chance.

Women were soft-hearted. If Evelyn ever tried to reject him in the future, he could always use this incident to pressure her.

Between sweet words and veiled threats, he was confident he could win her over.

Evelyn stared at the words, speechless.

Her brother had beaten him up, after all.

His lips curled into a cold smirk. "How arrogant. Does he really think he can catch the culprit?"

He had made sure his men left no traces behind.

Robert hesitated before speaking again. "There’s… one more thing."

Nathaniel arched a brow. "Go on."

"Mrs. Whitmore went to the hospital. It seems she’s taking care of Jonathan now."
